Drakengard is a fever dream of an action-RPG that refuses to play nice. You play as a mute, vengeance-fueled knight bound by a blood pact to a cynical red dragon, carving through armies in a world that feels perpetually on the brink of collapse. It is a bizarre, often clunky experience that oscillates between ground-based hack-and-slash combat and frantic aerial dragon battles. While the gameplay can be repetitive and the camera fights you as much as the enemies do, the game’s true draw is its unapologetically dark, weird, and nihilistic narrative that stands in stark contrast to the polished epics of its time.
