Xenosaga Episode I is a polarizing space opera that prioritizes grand, philosophical storytelling over traditional gameplay flow. You follow scientist Shion Uzuki and her enigmatic android, KOS-MOS, as they navigate a sprawling, futuristic conflict against the mysterious Gnosis. It is essentially a cinematic experience disguised as a turn-based RPG, famous for its dense, lore-heavy narrative and lengthy cutscenes. While it can feel clunky and slow, its ambition to tackle complex themes of religion, identity, and existence makes it a fascinating, if occasionally frustrating, relic of the PS2 era.
